I received this product in exchange for an honest review.  All thoughts are my own.  This post contains affiliate links.

We’ve had various VTech products in the past and the ones we haven’t passed on to younger family members are still going strong, including a Kidizoom camera.  We were excited to try out the VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch DX as we wanted to see how VTech has advanced their technology in the past few years.

The packaging is a bit much but it does present the watch to be much like an “adult” smart watch.  It’s a nice touch that made sense after I thought about it.

The smart watch must be charged fully via micro USB cord before use (into computer USB plug; I’m not sure if using a USB to AC adapter would work).  So if this is a Christmas gift, be sure take this all apart and charge it first!  There’s nothing worse than a gift that they need to wait to use.  I’d say it was fully charged in 3 hours.

The watch contains an analog clock and digital clock face, both which allow you to swipe to get different backgrounds. The clock also has an alarm and timer (watch out for this, my kids are good at setting the alarms and then going to school).  You’ll also find a calendar and calculator.

There’s a bunch of little games that you can play by touching the screen.  The motion detector feature and game also acts a sort of pedometer challenge to get your child up and moving.

The camera allows you take still photos and videos.  The videos can only be about 1 minute long but I think that’s good for the age range this is recommended for.  There’s also a voice changing feature so they can make themselves sound funny, or you can just record plain audio.  I was actually very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the video, photos and audio – far better than the products from even just a few years ago.

The watch itself seems pretty sturdy as it’s been dropped a few times without issue.  However, I don’t know if a direct blow to the screen would be disastrous.  It’s also splash-proof, meaning that a few drops of water here and there won’t hurt it, but it is definitely not meant to be submerged.

My 9 year old daughter liked using the audio, photo and video features.  In fact, I heard her several times recording and playing back video.  She thinks that kids her age may or may not like this toy – it depends on the kid.  I personally feel that many 9 year old children would be a bit too old for the Smart Watch.

My 7 year old son liked the mini-game Super Snowboard, where you use the touch feature to collect things and move around objects.  He thinks it would be great for kids his age.

I think the VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX would be a fun gift for any kid that likes technology.  I don’t know if the newness or the fact that they have to share makes it most desirable but it’s been a few days and it’s still in high demand.  Don’t buy this and think the kids will share – get one each.  I do think the novelty will wear off fairly quickly for older kids.

This Vtech Kidizoom Smart Watch would be a great gift idea for my nephew for sure. I will have to share this with my niece for her son. He would so love the mini games and would be thrilled that it is a watch.

Another gadget that kids and more then likely adults will like! I do like that it has an analog face–kids should learn to read an analog clock even though I don’t know how much longer they will be around.

VTech always comes out with interesting gadgets. Both of my kids would love this. They like anything that lets them take videos of themselves!
