You would think we didn’t have real cats (3 of them!) by how crazy my kids go over the Nintendo 3DS Petz games series.  The Petz games give players a chance to pick out an animal, be it a garden variety dog or a unique sea mammal, and help care for that pet.  The premise never gets old with them and they always appreciate a new Petz game.  I guess others feel the same if having sold 23 million units of the Petz games worldwide is any indication.

So when Petz Beach, a recent addition to the series, arrived at our house a few weeks ago, I instantly became the best mom in the world.  My 6 year old son tried it out first and he would have played all day if I had let him.  He’s able to read pretty well now and so doesn’t really need help with the game like he did with previous incarnations.  Petz Beach was a nice treat to have while he was recovering from pneumonia last week and had to stay quiet and rest.

Then my 8 year old daughter tried out the game.  As usual, she enjoyed taking care of the dog – she loves all games like this.  I also had to tell her to stop playing after awhile.  This game really absorbed both of them!

This is the two of them and their dog Spots:

There’s lots of really cool features in Petz Beach.  The first is that the game grows as you play and complete tasks.  You can also connect with other players of the game.  The environment changes to match the seasons (cool as long as I don’t have to rake those leaves or shovel the snow).  Finally, facts about animals, plants and insects are provided by Encyclopedia Britannica to help the player learn.  This is more than just a simple pet simulation game!  We’ve been fairly busy with various things but I’m hoping once it gets colder and we get more days off of school they’ll be able to play with their pets more.

I do wish they had this game more shareable.  I would like both kids to be able to share the same game cartridge on different machines and just create new profiles for each user.  Perhaps this feature is available, but none of us could find it.

Petz Countryside was also just released, if you’re not into the beach scene.  It’s got the same kind of game play, just in a different environment.  Pick up either Petz Beach or Countryside on Amazon for some awesome holiday gifts this year!

I can see why any child would love these games, even if they already have “real” pets at home. Plus I love that they can learn different facts while they play.

You’re right, that is really cool! I bet it keeps the game interface fresh and interesting.
