Christmas songs that I wish would go away forever

(For the record, I wrote this post last year in late November. I thought it was too early to post it so I waited to do so. That means I never did it. But it’s no longer too late to post ie the perks of procrastination. Enjoy!)

Since it’s December, I feel like I can post this now.  I didn’t want to push the envelope too early but I’ve been listening to Christmas music since well before Thanksgiving (Thank you, IHeartRadio).  Yes, that’s crazy, but my family LOVES Christmas music.  I used to listen to it in the summer when I was younger to bring back those warm Christmas memories.  It’s something my dad and I bond over.  Any classic Christmas song, I can pretty much tell you who it is.  One of my favorites is Johnny Mathis, but I also love Nat King Cole, the Lettermen, Bing Crosby, the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, and others I’ve forgotten.

But there are some songs that could go away forever, and I’d be a happier person.  I thought of this as I was listening to the station that has gone all Christmas already, and constantly changing the station.  Here are they are, in no particular order:

  • “(Simply Having) A Wonderful Christmas Time” – Paul McCartney: the electronic music drives me a bit nutty (And seriously, just as I’m posting this, this song came on. Ugh!)
  • “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” – John Lennon: I get thinking of others, especially at Christmas, but I feel that John Lennon is a bit condescending in this song.
  • “Same Old Lang Syne” – Dan Fogelberg: I know I’m reading more into this song than I need to, but it’s depressing.
  • “The Christmas Shoes” – unknown: another depressing song I don’t need to hear at Christmas.
  • “Where Are You Christmas” – Faith Hill; just tiresome and so overplayed.
  • “This Christmas” – the last version I heard was Mary J. Blige.  Too R&B for my taste.

That’s it for now, though I’m sure there are more.  While I get that these are trying to impart a message, I’m quite happy with my Fa la la la la’s and my 5 golden rings over here.

Do you have any Christmas songs that you hate?  Tell me below!  Don’t worry, you won’t offend me if it’s the 12 Days of Christmas.  I may wonder what’s wrong with you for a second or two but no offending.

Where are you Christmas is my favorite song. It gets played over and over here.

I mostly agree with your list, though I do like Christmas Shoes in moderation. (It’s by Newsong, by the way.) One of the songs I wish would go away is “Marshmallow World.” Any version. I can’t stand it, but it’s so dang catchy!

Christmas Shoes is one of my favorites! Most people I know don’t like it though 🙁 I don’t think I’ve ever heard a Christmas song I don’t like.

Except for Where Are You Christmas by Faith Hill, I agree with you. I could add about 2 dozen more if it were my list.

I actually love the first 3 on your list, so I would hate for them to go away forever.
I can’t think of any Christmas songs I hate.

Hmmm I don’t think there are any that I hate, but I LOVE Carol of the Bells! I could listen to that over and over again.

That’s one of my favorites, too! I could probably make an entire playlist of different versions and listen to it all day.
