The Offering by Angela Hunt Book Tour

I was given a copy of this book for free in order to provide a review as part of my involvement with Litfuse Publicity Group.

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for The Offering by Angela Hunt!  Before I tell you what I thought about this book, here’s a description:

One innocent mistake… a lifetime of consequences.

After growing up as an only child, Amanda Lisandra wants a big family. But since she and her soldier husband can’t afford to have more children right away, Mandy decides to earn money as a gestational carrier for a childless couple. She loves being pregnant, and while carrying the child she dreams of having her own son and maybe another daughter…

Just when the nearly perfect pregnancy is about to conclude, unexpected tragedy enters Mandy’s world and leaves her reeling. Devastated by grief, she surrenders the child she was carrying and struggles to regain her emotional equilibrium.

Two years later she studies a photograph of the baby she bore and wonders if the unthinkable has happened—could she have inadvertently given away her own biological child? Over the next few months Mandy struggles to decide between the desires of her grief-stricken heart and what’s best for the little boy she has never known.

I have to start out saying that this was a very tough book for me to read.  I don’t know why I signed up for the blog tour, knowing that post-partum hormones would be rampant while I read it.  But sign up I did, and I got through it, slowly.  I don’t mean this in the way in that book was terrible, but in that it was emotionally hard.  I consider this a tribute to the skills of the author – I felt many of the emotions that Amanda felt throughout the book.

Actually, I do know why I signed up to review this book, even knowing it would be an emotional read.  Many people don’t know this, but I carried twins as a gestational surrogate a few years ago.  I wanted to see how factual the book was and I have to really applaud the author or not perpetrating the various myths  about the process.  There was only one little detail that was wrong but other than that I feel that the book stands as a tribute to gestational surrogacy and the miracles it can bring to life.

On another topic, it was interesting to see how Amanda interacted with her Cuban in-laws.  While she didn’t always get along with them, they totally stepped up to help her and her daughter in her time of need, even while they themselves were grieving.  That’s a true family, one that has your back no matter what.  Even though Amanda later finds out the truth behind her relationship with her mother and begins to heal that rift, she is extremely lucky to have the loving family that she does.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, if it did need a couple of (boxes of) tissues while reading.  When I finally got past the “hard part”, the rest was smooth sailing and I finished quickly.  While I know this is billed as Christian fiction, I think it would be better classified as women’s fiction.  It is definitely not focused on God or the characters’ spiritual lives or needs.
