At seventeen, Nancy finds herself in a loveless marriage with Joe, a twenty-three year old construction worker. However, Joe is physically and emotionally abusive, and very controlling. By the age of nineteen, Nancy is pregnant with her third child. They start a construction company, which becomes very successful and they become quite wealthy. Nancy stays in the marriage for the sake of the children.
Her psychic abilities cotinue to expand, as she studies psychic development. Her reputation as a paranormal investigator grows and she is invited to participate in the 50th anniversary seance of Harry Houdini. Shortly after that, Nancy has an awakening moment of what true love is, when, as her mother lies dying in the hospital, her father enters the room with a single rose, signifying that he has always loved her mother and always will. Nancy makes a promise to herself that someday she too will find true love.
